Overview
For this final project completed at University, the brief was more relaxed and student led. I designed 16 pages of 90,thousand, a newspaper that would be found outside of Wembley Stadium that informed all concert-goers and football fanatics about the upcoming events at the stadium.
I designed the front and back page, hard news, soft news, a long read article and an infographic spread.
Research
This five week project was led by weekly readings that supported my design choices, with each week would informing the next stage of the design process. Due to this project being an advanced editorial design project, the justification behind each design decision was explored in depth.
Design process
Tabloid newspaper
90,thousand uses a tabloid newspaper format, a compact, travel friendly size frame that enables the user to read on the go, making it perfect for reading while stood in merchandise queues at Wembley Stadium.
The newspaper utilises a 10 column grid to allow for article flexibility; the even number lending itself to a variety of text widths, allowing for both two and three column text flow. To ensure consistency throughout the newspaper, the gutter width has been set to 10 points (3.528mm), the same as the leading value. The small gutter allows for continuous reading, as well as allowing both ragged and justified text to sit legibly within columns.
Navigation
Navigating 90,thousand is clearly highlighted through the use of colour and differentiation in type treatment. The main news section is indicated through a 2pt horizontal line that runs across the width of the page, with a ‘News’ block placed above it. Other sections featured within the newspaper are differentiated using a vertical line, colour coordinated to each individual section. This creates a clear visual system that helps the reader navigate between different areas of the newspaper.

Type treatment
90,thousand uses two typefaces, differing the type treatment between substantial body text and smaller uses of text. The Abril font family, by Jośe Scaglione and Veronika Burian from TypeTogether was designed for intense editorial use due to its width, making it a comfortable continuous reading font. Abril Display can be seen used for the masthead and numbers in the contents and statistics, while the text variant was in use for the body the as well as all subtitles. Varying drastically but contrasting well, for all headline text, captions and credits Tablet Gothic was used. The TypeTogethr typeface was designed for reading at both large and smaller sizes, making it suitable for headliner text as well as captions.
The outcome
Infographic
Due to the nature of 90,thousand, including a map of Wembley stadium alongside bus routes leaving the stadium felt necessary for all readers. Wether first timers at Wembley or simply just need some additional direction after an event, the map pull out provides useful and accessible information.

Back page
Following typical newspaper layouts, the back page tends to offer sporting news. Although Wembley Stadium primarily hosts concerts during the summer season, it also occasionally hosts major sporting events, allowing the newspaper to maintain its connection to both music and football.
90,thousand is a tabloid newspaper that uses a strong grid structure, contrasting typefaces and bright colours to engage readers while communicating information clearly.
