Overview
This second year project brief involved designing a prototype app to support people using a shared kitchen. The app was required to have three main features that would support the user throughout their shared kitchen experience.
Following a trip to IBM Hursley, where we took part in a design thinking workshop, I explored the process of creating a person and mapping the journey that persona would take. I used these methods to inform the development of my app and its features.
Research
When conducting research, I found that drawing on my personal experience as a student who used a shared kitchen during my first year of university was particularly useful, as I experienced many of the pain points first hand. To gain a broader perspective, I also spoke to friends and family who had also experienced living with a shared kitchen. Additionally, I explored resources from university websites, which provide students with advice on what to expect when living in communal spaces, alongside basic shared kitchen etiquette.
Design thinking workshop
Following the IBM design thinking workshop, I developed my main persona, Marta, a 24 year old mature student, living with first year students. Using techniques introduced during the workshop, I created a stakeholder map, empathy map, ‘as if’ scenarios and a need statement. These helped me establish a clear user pathway and identify the features that would best support Marta.
Features
After analysis Marta’s pain points, I began developing fearers that would support her day-to-day life. The home page includes a ‘Kitchen Status’ feature, providing a live update of who is currently using the kitchen. This allows Marta to check whether the kitchen is overcrowded before using it. The ‘Weekly Chores’ feature allows users to see whether they are up date with their shared kitchen responsibilities.
Other features are more personalised to Marta’s individual needs, for example, the meal planning feature provides fresh ideas for her weekly meals while showing the ingredients required for her food shop. Once Marta selects her meal plan, any missing ingredients are automatically added to her shopping list. Supermarket prices are displayed alongside the ingredients, encouraging more cost effective choices. The final feature is a shared calendar which shows when the kitchen will be hosting an event, allowing Marta to plan ahead.
Design process
Typography
As this app was designed for university students, I wanted the name to be direct and memorable. Unibites was a good combination of university and shared kitchen. The logo replaced the ‘i’s in the word with a knife and fork, making the logo visually distinctive alongside reinforcing the app’s purpose.
As Unibites is a native app, I wanted to maintain consistency with all other Apple applications. Clear Print Type highlights the importance of a minimum x-height of 2mm for readability. After evaluating a variety of typefaces, weights and sizes, I selected Apple’s San Francisco Pro, due to its readability and visual harmony with the logo.
Figma UI
When developing the UI from initial wireframes, I ensured consistency across the app. Each page uses a green header, containing the name of the current page, alongside the user’s profile in the top right corner.
Navigation
Unibites uses two main navigational features throughout the design. The primary navigation bar is positioned at the bottom of the screen and contains five familiar icons, allowing users to move between pages at ease. Research into navigation and orientation within smartphone interfaces highlight the limitations of small screens, where space restrictions mean that much of the available information is hidden from view. I therefore need to maximise the available space without overcrowding the interface. I achieved this through features such as scrollable carousels, allowing additional information to be accessed without taking up unnecessary screen space.
The outcome
This project strengthened my understanding of user-centred design, particularly the importance of designing with a specific user need in mind.
